Technical Service | Tecway Engineers Support FSRU Pre-Cooling Before LNG Bunkering

In LNG bunkering operations, cooling down the storage tanks is an important preparatory step before bunkering begins.

Completing this process in a controlled, orderly manner directly affects the smooth execution of the subsequent LNG bunkering operation.

Recently, Tecway's engineering team visited a shipyard in Jiangsu to provide on-site technical support for the liquid cargo system of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). The team worked with the shipyard on tank pre-cooling and related preparations ahead of LNG bunkering.

01 On-Site Collaboration to Develop the LNG Bunkering Plan

LNG is a cryogenic liquefied gas. Before bunkering begins, the storage tanks must be cooled down in accordance with process requirements, gradually reaching the specified temperature conditions, with the relevant parameters confirmed to meet requirements.

For this project, Tecway's engineers worked with shipyard personnel to develop the LNG bunkering plan, defining the operating procedures and on-site inspection requirements in preparation for pre-cooling and bunkering.

02 Detailed Inspections to Identify Valve and Piping Risks

The liquid cargo system comprises numerous pipelines, valves and associated equipment. On-site inspection is an important part of ensuring that pre-cooling proceeds safely and in an orderly manner.

During the operation, Tecway's engineers inspected the vessel's entire piping network, checking the relevant valves and pipework individually for potential leaks, with particular attention to the condition of critical equipment and connections.

Meanwhile, the engineering team monitored changes in pressure and temperature sensor readings in the cargo control room (CCR), working with on-site personnel to understand system conditions and support the pre-cooling operation.

03 Two Rotating Shifts to Keep Pre-Cooling on Track

To meet on-site operational requirements, the project adopted a 12+12 two-shift rotation. Personnel maintained coverage across the shifts, continuing inspections and operational coordination.

Throughout pre-cooling, the engineers remained in communication with shipyard personnel, focusing on piping conditions, valve checks, and temperature and pressure changes to support the tank cool-down process.

Through coordinated efforts by all parties, the on-site service was successfully completed. The operation remained stable and under control overall, providing a sound foundation for subsequent LNG bunkering.

    04 Practical, On-Site Technical Support

From developing the bunkering plan and inspecting pipework to checking equipment conditions and supporting pre-cooling, this service demonstrated Tecway's on-site technical support capabilities in vessel liquid cargo system projects.

Marine technical services require not only specialist knowledge, but also engineers who work directly on site, collaborating closely with shipyards and operational teams to implement technical requirements.

Tecway will continue to draw on its professional engineering team and project experience to provide shipyards, shipowners and partners with timely, reliable marine technical services and on-site support.
